Ariel’s Magical Vitalizing Breakfast Smoothie Recipe

Smoothies are a great way to get a bunch of fruits and veggies into your belly in way less time than it would take you to sit down and munch ’em all. Smoothies are also amazing because you can easily throw in all kinds of add-in’s to greatly boost their nutritional value.

Personally, I like to have a smoothie for breakfast every day. This is because I am the type of person that normally can’t “stomach” a lot of things in the morning. Smoothies have made it easy for me and my tummy to start the day with something that not only gives me long lasting energy but, establishes my healthy food choices for the day.

When deciding on ingredients for my smoothie I always want it to taste good, be packed full of nutrients and be as low on any added sugar. Because of this, I refrain from adding unnecessary “taste only” ingredients and stick to only fruits & veggies. (Focusing more on the veggies than fruit.)

For example: I’ve found that my smoothies taste exactly the same when made with water instead of coconut milk or any other milk substitute. This discovery saves me on bunch on calories, money and extra grams of added sugar!

  • Makes 1 Quart (Two Servings)
  • >5 minutes

Note: It might sound a little silly to write out the instructions to make a smoothie. You’re probably thinking “Just throw it in the blender. Done. Duh.”. However, if you’re like me and haven’t yet purchased an amazing Vitamix or whatever, you know that there is a certain way of layering things to get your blender to blend properly. You’re welcome because I’ve figured it out!!

1.) Add bananas and cover in the water.

2.) Add powders.

3.) Add the greens and use them to press the bananas down a lil’.

4.) Add the fruits and BLEND!!

Ariel’s Plant-Based Red Sauce Recipe

After making one-gazillion things that include a red sauce I have finally developed my own! It’s very simple but very delicious.

I make a big batch of this sauce once every couple of weeks, jar it,  then pop it in the fridge to use whenever. I like to use it as a pizza sauce & pasta sauce. But, you can use it wherever red sauce is required!


Ariel’s Plant-Based Red Sauce

  • Makes one, 1 Quart Mason Jar Full
  • 10 minute prep, 40 minutes (passive) cook time

Ingredients:

  • 3.5 cups water
  • Roasted red bell pepper (optional)
  • 5 medium tomatoes
  • 2 cup diced red or yellow onion
  • 16oz of tomato paste
  • 4 cloves garlic (or more, garlic is the bomb!)
  • 3 dates
  • 1.5 tablespoon dried oregano
  • 1.5 tablespoon dried basil
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • Sea salt to taste
  • 1 gallon covfefe (optional, but you’ll need a bigger jar.)

Instructions:

Optional Pre-Step 1.) Slice bell pepper in half from top to bottom. Remove stem & seeds. Place pepper, insides down, on a tin-foiled baking sheet. Bake at 425°F for about 30 minutes or until skin is starting to char. Remove from oven and let cool until it’s tolerable to handle. Peel the skin from the inside flesh. If you would like a more charred flavor you can leave a few blackened bits attached.

1.) Combine all the ingredients (minus two cups of water) in a blender or food processor and blend until smooth.

2.) Poor the mixture into a saucepan with the 2 remaining cups of water.

3.) Cook over medium heat for 40 minutes. Season to taste. (You’ll probably add like 6 more cloves of garlic because garlic is king.)

4.) Use right away or let cool, then jar it and put it in the fridge or freezer!

One Year, No Makeup: 7 Things I Learned

I used to wear a lot of makeup. Like, A LOT. But hey, I had a lot of acne & acne scars to cover. I got really good at it too. Especially when in came to concealer and foundation. Which covers your entire face…

However, last year at his birthday party, The Boyfriend casually said to me “You know. I honestly like it better when you don’t wear make-up.”. I thanked him, slightly confused yet mostly relived and just like that I never wore make-up again. (Though, I didn’t even realize it until planning his birthday party for this year.)

May 30th, 2017 marks one entire year of my unintentional/intentional no-makeup journey. Here is what I learned in no particular order…

 

1.) Everyone Thought I Was Sick.

For the first month-ish someone would ask me something along the lines of, “Are you sick?” or “Are you okay?” at least once a day.

I get how people used to seeing my full-face-of-make-up on the daily would be a little confused. However, absolute strangers were usually the ones asking me these questions! Though, I never figured out why that was…

2.) I Felt Very Naked/Exposed.

If you’re anything like me, I was using my makeup as something to hide behind. It took a long time to get used to. Looking back I don’t think I finally felt total comfort being anywhere until around 7-8 months in.

I first had to get used to being make-up free in my usual places: home, work, around family & friends. That only took a few weeks to feel decent. It’s when you do things like, go out with your dolled up friends or attend an event that you really want to cave.

Don’t get me wrong, It’s not like a totally gave up on my appearance. It’s just that, as a female, you look a silly taking extra care of your appearance, shaving, grooming your eyebrows, dressing up yet not even apply a bit of mascara. Which bring me to…

3.) I Had A Hard Time Getting Used to Looking at Myself.

Final checks in the mirror before you leave the house or catching a glimpse of yourself in a window or the mirror in the bathroom were all really though for a while. Especially when you finally forgot to care about what you look like, allowing yourself to genuinely enjoy an experience. Only to get hit with the though of “Oh shoot, THAT is what I looked like this whole time?”.

4.) I Feel So Fresh and So Clean, Always.

The absolute bliss of having a fresh clean face all day long is the number one reason I never ended up with make-up on my face this last year. Though, with my acne I may not have always looked so-fresh-and-so-clean, I definitely felt it.

BONUS: I could laugh, cry, sweat and even get rained on without having to worry. Do you know what that feels like?! FREEDOM I TELL YA!

5.) My Acne Finally Started to Clear!

Though, there were many things I had to do to finally heal my severe cystic acne, going sans makeup played a huge roll. About a month after I did not have a single blackhead on my face. (I promise I will write all about my acne healing journey soon.)

6.) I Save So Much Time aka I Get So Much More Sleep!!

I fell like this is a bit self- explanatory but, I’ll give you the gist. I wake up 30 minutes before I have to leave anywhere. That gives me time to shower, do my extensive skincare routine, get dressed and even make my morning smoothie without rushing.

7.) I Have Gained More Confidence Than I Could Ever Imagine.

Once I stopped covering up and hiding behind my mask everything changed for me. Not only did I finally feel comfortable with showing my true face, I finally felt comfortable showing my true self.

The whole reason I am where I am today is because of my daily decision to not hide my face. …And to think, all I needed was that one little push from the human I love the most.

Now, I want you to know that I am in no way knocking people that want to wear makeup. You do you. Am I ever going to wear it again? Probably, yeah! (Especially now that I found the most wonderful, all-natural, certified organic, vegan, crulty-free, etc.. cosmetics.) However, I will never use it for more than an enhancement of my natural beauty for very special occasions.

Brush up. Dry skin brushing daily before a shower helps remove dead skin cells and boosts circulation.

Worth its salt. Relaxing baths with salts that contain plenty of minerals will help reduce symptoms as well as nourish your body.

Fit In by Fitting Out

We all know the term “fitting in” because, we’ve all tried to do it! Heck, we’re both probably doing it right now! I don’t have enough fingers, toes or hairs on my head to count the times I’ve broken my own heart trying to “fit in”.

Well, I’m done with it! If you need me I’ll be over here fitting OUT!

Fitting OUT… has she gone completely bananas?

No, no, no… well maybe. Just hear read me out!

Fitting out doesn’t have to mean being totally different from other people. I find that I personally have a hard time embracing something that is “in” or “cool”. Even when I fully agree with what it is and have the craving to do it myself, I don’t! I am embarrassed to be “one of those people”… When often those people are the stinkin’ cool people fitting-IN!

To me, fitting out means to “find what is in your heart and embrace your authentic self” or simply put, be yourself.

This idea is so incredibly important, maybe even the basis, to our overall health. If we are not comfortable with ourselves how can we be truly happy?

I’m not going to lie. I’ve been doing this whole “be yourself” thing for a solid year now and it’s freaking hard. However, the outcome has made me a better mother, a better friend and a better partner/spouse. I’ve relieved a ton of my depression and anxiety symptoms, making me genuinely happy and even cleared my severe cystic acne!

How did I finally embrace fitting out?

  • I took a step back and really looked at who I was and who I truly wanted to be.
  • I surrounded myself with like-minded people.
  • I let others know “Hey! This is me!”.
  • I let myself know “Hey! This is me!”.
  • Then, I topped it all off with a whole lotta self love.

But, it doesn’t just stop there! I practice fitting out every single day. For example, I went back to school this month, I started a new business and I even started this blog where I am writing my feeling out and sharing it with the public!

…and you want to know the best part? People (eventually) aren’t going to think you’re crazy. They’re going to flock to you! Humans are attracted to happy, genuine people!

So, I started a blog…

As my first blog post I figured I would introduce myself a little. This way you might get a better idea of why I started a blog in the first place! (Also, this will probably end up as my about page. Just sayin’)

A Little Backstory: For most of my life I’ve struggled with anxiety, depression, low self esteem, a lil’ bit-o-baggage around the middle… and then in my early twenty’s, after having my daughter, my body said “Hey, here is some severe cystic acne!”

As the story goes, I tried everything to heal my ailments. Though, I did try several different medications for my anxiety issues, I just couldn’t ever get my head around taking pills for acne. There had to be another way!

In 2007, I moved in with a plant-based, vegetarian girl who had glowing skin and lacked all body-fat. She said this was all due to “pure diet, dude”. So, since my lil’ bit-o-baggage around the middle was not so little anymore and my adult skin had decided to forsake me entirely and break out like a teenage boy in puberty, I decided to try her diet…

*Insert Angelic Chorus* I lost 30lbs in three months, my face was clear, my moods were completely stabilized, the sun was shining, the birds were chirping, there was world peace and THEN… I decided to eat like garbage again. (But, that’s a story for a later post…)

FLASH FORWARD TO TODAY: After almost ten solid years of personal research and on-and-off experimentation of a gazillion different diets, I have identified and overcome my obstacles to finally find what works for me. (Also a story for a later post…)

I am so inspired by what I’ve been able to accomplish in my own life that I just can’t keep it to myself! I am passionate about helping others look and feel their most healthy, happy, beautiful & vibrant by living a healthy lifestyle and eating real nutritious foods!

So… I started this here blog, became a representative for Miessence and enrolled in the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, where my education will equip me with extensive knowledge in holistic nutrition, health coaching, and prevention by studying a wide variety of dietary theories and practical lifestyle coaching methods!! (Oh, and I’ll get a certificate so I’ll legally be able to call myself a health coach…)
